AAUP Foundation Announces Grant Recipients

Date: 8/31/15

The AAUP Foundation is pleased to announce the following grants.

A Legal Defense Fund grant to Robin Meade, an adjunct professor and active union officer dismissed by Moraine Valley Community College after she criticized the administration’s treatment of adjuncts. The Legal Defense Fund provides grants to support faculty who incur legal fees in cases at the trial and appellate levels that affect the careers of academics.

An Academic Freedom Fund grant to Teresa Buchanan of Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, who is contesting her dismissal after twenty years at LSU.  An additional grant to the AAUP to support travel costs for investigating committee members for four investigations of violations of AAUP policies and standards conducted during the 2014–2015 fiscal year. Investigations were conducted at Felician College, New Jersey; MD Anderson Cancer Center, Dallas, Texas; the University of Southern Maine, Portland, Maine; and the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign, Urbana, Illinois. The Academic Freedom Fund supports academic freedom through research, publication, and direct assistance to faculty members.

A Glick, Rappaport, Tristman Memorial Fund grant to support the cost of a course release for professor Hans-Joerg Tiede to plan and prepare the 2016 AAUP Governance Conference. The Glick, Rappaport, Tristman Memorial Fund supports lectures on academic freedom and shared governance at AAUP conferences.

Grant were also made to support registration and travel costs for faculty from the University of Wisconsin and Sweet Briar College to attend the 2015 AAUP/AAUP-CBC Summer Institute. The faculty at these two institutions are facing severe challenges to academic freedom, due process and shared governance on their campuses, challenges which could become models for a national restructuring of higher education.
