About the AAUP Foundation

The AAUP Foundation is the charitable arm of the AAUP enterprise. With the AAUP (a professional association), it shares a commitment to academic freedom and shared governance, defines fundamental professional values and standards for higher education, and ensures higher education’s contribution to the common good. 

Mission

The AAUP Foundation is organized to fund, through its grant making process, the charitable and educational purposes of the AAUP, including supporting principles of academic freedom and the quality of higher education in a free and democratic society. Safeguarding academic freedom encourages free inquiry, promotes the expansion of knowledge, and creates an environment in which learning and research can flourish, thereby enhancing the quality of higher education and benefiting society.

Leadership

Effective June 14, 2021, the AAUP Foundation is governed by a board of directors that includes a president, vice president, secretary-treasurer, and the members of the AAUP national Council.

Constitution

Amended by the AAUP Foundation Board of Directors, July 1, 2013, December 3, 2014, January 7, 2020, and June 14, 2021.

Article I—Name and Status

1. The name of the organization shall be the AAUP Foundation (hereinafter “Foundation”).

2. The Foundation shall operate as a nonprofit corporation under the Delaware general corporation law.
