About the AAUP Foundation

The AAUP Foundation is organized to fund, through its grant making process, the charitable and educational purposes of the AAUP, including supporting principles of academic freedom and the quality of higher education in a free and democratic society. Safeguarding academic freedom encourages free inquiry, promotes the expansion of knowledge, and creates an environment in which learning and research can flourish, thereby enhancing the quality of higher education and benefiting society.

The AAUP Foundation is governed by a board of directors that includes the president, first vice president, second vice president, and secretary-treasurer of the AAUP; one elected member of the AAUP’s Council; the chair of the AAUP’s Committee A on Academic Freedom and Tenure; an AAUP-CBC representative appointed by the AAUP-CBC executive committee; and three public directors who are not, at the time of their election, officers of the AAUP and who need not hold any other position within the Association.

Amended by the AAUP Foundation Board of Directors, July 1, 2013 and December 3, 2014.

The AAUP Foundation is the charitable arm of the AAUP enterprise, which also includes the AAUP (a professional association), and the AAUP-CBC (a labor union). Each organization shares a commitment to academic freedom and shared governance, defines fundamental professional values and standards for higher education, and ensures higher education’s contribution to the common good.
